Bellano, between the lake and the road to Valsassina
Bellano is a town of just over three thousand inhabitants situated on the eastern shore of Lake Como, at the mouth of the Pioverna stream. It lies a short distance from Lecco and about an hour from Milan, marking the point where the lakeshore meets the road climbing up toward Valsassina.
This location determined everything: trade, industry, even the name.
From "beautiful river" to "place of war": the uncertain origin of the name
The etymology of Bellano has never been clarified, and the two most frequently cited hypotheses tell the story of two different towns:
- The writer Sigismondo Boldoni, a native of Bellano, traced the place name back to Bellus-Amnis (“beautiful river”), referring to the Pioverna.
- Historian Oleg Zastrow, however, proposes Bellum-Ano (“place of war”)—an interpretation considered more plausible given the village’s strategic location, situated at the intersection of the coastal road, the *Sentiero del Viandante* (Wayfarer’s Path), and the route to Valsassina.
A village that has garnered numerous awards
In 2018, Bellano was awarded the Italian Touring Club’s **Orange Flag**—a designation for small inland towns that combine hospitality with heritage preservation—and joined the association of **Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages**. In October 2025, it received the **UN Tourism “Best Tourism Village”** distinction, alongside Arquà Petrarca and Asolo.
The flip side of the coin: during peak-season weekends, the town fills up. The municipal administration has reported over a million visits in a single year.

There are six places to see in Bellano, all within walking distance: the Orrido gorge with the Ca’ del Diavol, the Giancarlo Vitali Museum at Palazzo Lorla, the San Nicolao Contemporary Art space, the churches in the town center, the lakefront with its small harbor, and—heading up towards the mountains—the Vendrogno Ethnographic Museum.
1. L'Orrido and the Devil's House
The **Orrido** is a deep, narrow gorge carved into the rock by a watercourse. The Bellano gorge was formed by the Pioverna stream and can be explored via walkways suspended above the potholes and waterfalls. Standing at the entrance is the **Ca’ del Diavol** (House of the Devil), a pentagonal tower adorned with mythological figures that inspired its name and the legends surrounding it. Today, it houses a three-level multimedia exhibition covering the gorge’s geology, local legends, and a room featuring virtual reality headsets.

2. The Giancarlo Vitali Museum at Palazzo Lorla
Facing the garden is the most surprising piece: Uccelli al Museo (Birds at the Museum), a large mural created by his son Velasco as a tribute to his father.
3. San Nicolao Contemporary Art
At Via San Nicolao 9, within an ancient church, two eras coexist: the ground floor hosts temporary exhibitions, while above—suspended from the ceiling—are Danilo Vitali’s repoussé copper fish, forming what is known as the “suspended aquarium.” All that remains of the original building are the presbytery’s ribbed vault and a cycle of Late Gothic frescoes attributed to the Master of Bellano.
4. The churches and the historic center
The Parish Church of Saints Nazaro and Celso dominates the old town center and gives its name to the patronal festival held in July; the Church of Santa Marta is located nearby.
The surrounding historic center can be explored in 20 minutes: narrow alleys, arcades, very few shops, and an urban layout that has remained unchanged since the days when Bellano was a textile hub.
5. The lakefront and the small harbor
From the small harbor, you can see Bellagio and the opposite shore, and watch the weather change over the water long before it shifts on land. Bars and restaurants are concentrated here.
6. The MUU in Vendrogno
Vendrogno has been a hamlet of Bellano since 2021 and is home to the MUU – Museum of Milk and the History of Muggiasca (located at Via Roma 12), an ethnographic museum dedicated to milk processing and life in the mountain pastures.

**What to do in Bellano** depends largely on the time of year. The village’s calendar centers on two main periods: summer—featuring the lake fish festival, jazz, the patron saint’s festival, and opera performances overlooking the water—and the night of January 5th, with the reenactment of the *Pesa Vegia*.

The Pesa Vegia
A local festival celebrating the town's identity for over 400 years. It originated from an event in 1605, when the Count of Fuentes issued a decree reinstating the old units of measurement—known as the *pesa vegia*. Since then, every January 5th, the town has staged a procession of the Three Wise Men, the hauling of the weighing scales, a reading of the decree from the town hall balcony, and a bonfire on the pier at midnight.

What to eat in Bellano
Missoltino and the flavors of the valley
Bellano’s cuisine reflects the town’s own dual nature. *Missoltino* comes from the lake, while alpine cheeses come from Valsassina—two products found in the town center’s *trattorias*, often on the very same menu.
- The missoltino
*Missoltino* is the *agone*—a type of freshwater sardine—after it has undergone a preservation process: the fish are salted for two or three days, then washed and hung to dry for about ten days until the flesh takes on a reddish hue. They were traditionally pressed into wooden barrels known as *missolte*, from which the name derives. It is served grilled, with a drizzle of vinegar and oil, and accompanied by polenta. It has a bold flavor: you either love it immediately or you don’t like it at all.

A simple organization
- Morning: the gorge and the tower
Arrive at opening time and start with Ca’ del Diavol, which has limited entry numbers; the visit concludes with a walk through the gorge. Allow a good hour and a half.
- Afternoon: museums and alleyways
Palazzo Lorla and San Nicolao are just a few minutes’ walk away and can be visited in a single afternoon, allowing time to stroll through the historic center and stop in the square.
- Evening: the lakeside promenade
Wrap up your visit at the small marina, with a table right by the water and a plate of *missoltini* with polenta. Sunset on the opposite shore is the best time for photos.
The right time to come to Bellano?
The sights to see in Bellano remain the same regardless of the season, but the way you experience them changes.
