After the first few hairpin bends, as the town fades away behind you and only the woods remain. The scent of the air changes, your stride finds its rhythm, and you realise you’ve arrived where you wanted to be: in Valsassina, one of the most unspoilt valleys in the Lombardy Pre-Alps, made for those who love walking.

If you’re looking for ideas for your next trek in Valsassina, this guide will take you through the valley’s most beautiful areas, from family-friendly plateaus to peaks for experienced hikers, and even tells you where to find a trail map so you don’t get lost.

Valsassina, a valley made for walking

Just over an hour from Milan and a stone’s throw from Lecco and Lake Como, Valsassina unfolds like a world of its own: pastures, mountain pastures, beech forests and an amphitheatre of mountains that surround it on all sides.

It is a bountiful valley, where the mountains are close by and easily accessible. Here, hiking in Valsassina isn’t just for the fit and active: there’s a trail for every age group, and every step offers peace and quiet, fresh air and views that stay with you forever.

Hiking areas not to be missed

Before discussing individual trails, it is worth familiarising yourself with the main areas that make the valley a hiker’s paradise in Valsassina. These are the ideal starting points for exploring, each with its own distinct character.

1. Pian delle Betulle

At an altitude of around 1,500 metres, accessible by cable car from Margno, Pian delle Betulle is a natural viewpoint nestled amongst woods, pastures and tranquillity. It is perfect for those seeking unspoilt nature without having to exert themselves too much: scenic trails, a treetop adventure park and views that change with the seasons.

At over 1,300 metres, Alpe di Paglio is one of the valley’s most popular destinations: spectacular views, accessible nature and year-round relaxation at high altitude. It is the ideal place for a stroll, to breathe in the fresh air and set off on hikes to the surrounding peaks.

Where the mountains meet the sky, Alpe Giumello offers spectacular views of Lake Como, vast green spaces and trails suitable for everyone. It is also one of the valley’s iconic paragliding spots: the perfect place for those seeking breathtaking views.

For those looking further afield, the valley does not disappoint. The Piani di Bobbio, accessible by cable car from Barzio, serve as the gateway to Zuccone Campelli and the high-altitude trails. Further north rises Pizzo dei Tre Signori (2,554 m), whilst the Grigne range dominates the horizon: challenging destinations, but among the most rewarding for experienced hikers.

Overlooking Lecco and Lake Como at an altitude of around 1,300 metres, the Piani dei Resinelli is a panoramic plateau at the foot of the Grignetta (Southern Grigna). It is easily reached by car from Ballabio, at the entrance to Valsassina, and is loved just as much by families — thanks to the viewpoint, the park and the easy trails — as it is by climbing enthusiasts, who find one of the most famous rock climbing areas in the Pre-Alps here. The area’s historic mining past is also worth discovering, traces of which can still be seen along the trails.
