Frequently asked questions
We have prepared a dedicated page with a selection of typical dishes from the Lake Como area! Discover local specialties that tell the story and gastronomic culture of this fascinating area: Eat like a local.
Wines from the Lake Como area are characterized by a well-established winemaking tradition. The Valtellina region, in particular, is known for its high-quality red wines with a strong and distinctive flavor. This mountainous region features vineyards cultivated on steep mountain slopes, where sunlight is limited and cultivation is challenging. These conditions give the wines a unique complexity and structure. Among the most famous are Valtellina Superiore, a robust wine with fruity notes and good tannic balance, and Sforzato, a rich and complex wine made from dried grapes, ideal for pairing with meat dishes, butter, and cheeses. Other red wines to consider are Sassella and Inferno, each reflecting the unique terroir of the region.
As far as white wines are concerned, Lombardy offers options such as Lugana, which is fresh and fruity and goes well with seafood and light dishes, and Franciacorta, a high-quality sparkling wine, often compared to Champagne, that is ideal for special occasions and to pair with appetizers and light dishes.
If you want to visit a local winery, we suggest contacting Passione in Vinicola! For information and reservations, call +39 348 914 7695.
The craft beer scene in the Lake Como area is growing, and there are a number of local breweries producing interesting beers, often inspired by regional traditions and using local ingredients. Here is some information on beers in the area:
-
Belli e Beati (Premana). The craft brewery L.M.B. la Mia Birra di Valsassina, run by a very nice family, is known for its high-quality craft beers, brewed in Premana. Their specialties include Chiara, a light and refreshing beer; Pils, characterized by an intense aroma of malt and spice; and Fumè, with a distinctive smoky flavor. They also offer IGA, a sour beer with a very distinctive flavor, but one that not everyone likes. The brewery has a tasting room for beer and local products, located near the Primaluna tennis courts.
-
Birrificio Lariano (Sirone, near Lecco): This is one of the best known craft breweries in the Lake Como area. They produce a variety of high quality beers, from IPAs to Stouts to Saisons. Birrificio Lariano’s beers are prized for their distinctive character and careful selection of raw materials. Some popular beers include Grigna (a Pale Ale) and Luppolina (an IPA).
-
Agriturismo Don Guanella (Valmadrera): In addition to wines, the agriturismo also produces craft beers using local ingredients. Production is limited but of high quality, with a strong focus on the use of local malts and hops.
-
Legnone Brew ery (Dubino, Valtellina): Although slightly north of Lake Como, this brewery offers a wide range of craft beers including ales, darks and spices. Legnone IPA is one of their flagship beers.
The Lake Como region is renowned for its variety of fine cheeses, each with unique characteristics. Here are some of the local cheeses not to be missed:
-
Taleggio: This cheese is very creamy and fatty, with different levels of ripening affecting its flavor and aroma. It is perfect to enjoy with fresh bread or as an accompaniment to hot dishes.
-
Gorgonzola: Probably the most famous blue cheese in the area, Gorgonzola is characterized by an intense flavor and creamy texture. It lends itself well both as an appetizer and as an ingredient in gourmet dishes.
-
Bitto, Casera and Pizzoccherai: These traditional cheeses come from Valtellina and are known for their robust and distinctive flavor. Bitto, in particular, is a hard cheese that goes well with typical mountain dishes.

In Italy, restaurant opening hours are generally limited, and finding establishments open 24/7 is quite rare. Usually, restaurants open for lunch from 12:00 until 14:30 and for dinner from 19:00 until 22:00. It is common for many restaurants to have a closing day, which usually falls on working days of the week, such as Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday.
In tourist areas, hours may be more flexible, while in small towns the situation tends to be more rigid. For this reason, it is advisable to always check opening hours and, if possible, reserve places in popular restaurants, especially during the high season.
It may seem impossible for big city dwellers, but food deliveries are not yet well developed in Lake Como. In larger cities like Lecco, it is not difficult to find services like justeat.it and glovoapp.com, which partner with local restaurants for deliveries and are very intuitive to use.
In smaller villages, one way to order food is to contact the restaurants directly. Usually, deliveries are made by pizzerias. However, it is often necessary to pick up the takeout food in person.
For a few years now, Taac Delivery (taacdelivery.it) has been active — a small local agency operating in the province of Lecco.
Weekly markets are held in several towns around Lake Como on specific days of the week, offering a rich selection of local products. Among the main ones, we can find:
- Lecco: Every Wednesday and Saturday, the market offers a variety of fresh food products, including cheeses, cold cuts, and seasonal vegetables.
- Barzio: Every Friday, Valsassina’s most famous market is held at the parking lot behind Passoni Bakery, with a wide selection of local products.
- Bellano: Market on Thursdays, where fresh foods and local crafts can be found.
- Colico: Every Friday, with fresh, local produce.
In addition, many other towns in the area have their markets on different days, where you can buy fresh food, clothing, accessories, handicrafts, and household items. Not only do these markets offer high quality products, but they are also an important meeting point for the community and an opportunity for visitors to discover local traditions

Agritourisms are characterized by an ecological and sustainable approach, and are required to use local and seasonal products in their cuisine. They are also eligible for tax breaks to promote more natural and sustainable lifestyles.
Refuges
Refuges are facilities located in the mountains, accessible only on foot. They usually operate from April to October, depending on weather conditions. These places offer a unique opportunity for visitors to enjoy local food at affordable prices, making the experience even more authentic.
